Capture R&D Portable Scanners & VOID (2022)

A collapsible, softbox-based texture scanner designed for on location, high-quality PBR captures with minimal setup/teardown. The build repurposes a high quality octagonal softbox and adds a custom 3D printed PETG camera mount reinforced with steel, plus 22 individually fired LEDs that sequence in sync with the shutter via a microcontroller each LED fires in turn per shot to produce a clean stack of lighting states for robust maps. The interior is relined (felt/duvetyn) to kill bounce light for consistent results. In practice, crews can unpack, scan, and repack in about five minutes, making this ideal for props, costumes, and on-set look-dev. The design intentionally improves on prior community concepts (e.g., stiffer vertical/overhead support, transport housing), while staying light enough for one-person operation.

Why it matters

Field-ready, 5-minute setup for high-quality PBR textures anywhere: the rig turns a softbox into a collapsible scanner where 22 LEDs fire one-by-one in sync with the shutter, giving clean, repeatable lighting states. A 3D printed PETG camera mount (reinforced with steel) keeps geometry stable, and the interior is relined with felt/duvetyn to kill bounce so captures are consistent and ingest cleanly. This is the same discipline that makes human scans production-safe: controlled lighting, locked settings, repeatability, and fast QC.
